Scripture: Romans 1: 18-20

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

Commentary: God has revealed himself in and through his creation

Does anyone have an excuse for not believing in God?  God makes His truth plain.

The Bible answers with an emphatic no. God has revealed what he is like in and through his creation. Every person either accepts or rejects God. Don’t be fooled. We all have an inner sense of what God requires, but many of us choose to ignore it. Our moral standards are always better than our behavior.

Suppressing God’s truth in order to live our own way is no excuse. We know the truth, so we know the consequences. Some will ask how can a loving God send anyone to hell.

Paul says God has revealed himself plainly from creation to all people. We know when we are doing something wrong because that is the Holy Spirit within us. To be in denial of our spirit is to be in denial of God.

God graciously gave us his word and the Holy Spirit within us so that we might fully believe in him and live the life of his love.

Romans Chapter 1

Scripture: Romans 1: 21-22,25

Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him, not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.(21-22)  Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.(25)

Scripture Commentary: Creator vs. Creature: Who are you worshipping?

Are you worshipping God, our creator, or idols of your own making? Do you make up your own ideas of what your god should be and do; so your greed, hatred, envy, gossip and strife can manifest in your mind? This manifestation will grow to a point where you hate God and encourage others to follow your example.

God does not cause this steady decline toward evil. He gives you a choice. God permits you to experience the natural consequences of your sin. In worshipping the god you make, you are misrepresenting the One True God.

The True God is the first in your life. He will not lie or mislead you. We sinners must trust Christ alone to put us on the right path. When we worship the creature instead of the creator, we lose sight of our identity as followers of Jesus Christ, Our Creator.

Does life without God look like freedom to you? Freedom is having our Lord Jesus Christ in your life every step of the way.

Romans Chapter 1

Scripture: Romans 11: 16-18

For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. And if some of the branches are broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, Do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.

Scripture Commentary: We are all branches of God’s tree

Has anyone ever boasted to you about how great they are? About their connections and knowledge? Have you ever asked yourself what kind of person does this?

The old saying, “The apple does not fall far from the tree,” is true. God has grafted us onto His tree of life. In return, we shall produce fruit that is acceptable to Him. We thrive on His Word.

If we boast, we boast about God. How God has taken us out of the sinful life we were living and gave us a fruitful life with Him. God is the source of all things. He is the power that sustains and rules the world we live in. He governs the universe and our lives in perfect wisdom, justice, and love.

We are Gentile that he grafted onto his tree. He is our root. He feeds us. With Him we can branch out to form more branches.

Romans Chapter 11

Scripture: Romans 7: 21-24

So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God – through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

Scripture Commentary: We Cannot Overcome Our Sinful Nature and Do Good Without Christ’s Help

We have all said something like this at one time or another: “The devil made me do it.”  “I didn’t do it, the sin in me did it.”

Even though these sound like good excuses, we are still responsible for our actions. We must never use the power of sin or Satan as an excuse because both are defeated enemies.

The “law at work in the members of my body” is the sinful nature deep within each of us.  This is our vulnerability to sin.  It refers to everything within us that is more loyal to our old way of selfish living than to God.

This inward struggle with sin was as real for Paul as it is for us. Whenever Paul felt lost, he would return to the beginning of his spiritual life, remembering that he had already been freed by Jesus Christ.

Without Christ’s help, sin is stronger than we are, and sometimes we are unable to defend ourselves against its attacks. That is why we should never stand up to sin alone. Jesus Christ, who has conquered sin, promises to stand by our side.

Romans Chapter 7

For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sin, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter. 

Romans 7: 5-6

Commentary:

 Sinners are condemned by the law, the law keeper can’t live up to it, and the person with the new nature finds his or her obedience to the law sabotaged by the effects of the old nature. When a person dies to the old life and belongs to Christ, a new life begins. Unbeliever’s mindsets are centered on their own personal gratification. Those who don’t follow Christ have only their own self determination as their source of power.

People try to earn their way to God by keeping a set of rules, attending church, doing good deeds, and obeying commandments. All they earn for their efforts is frustration and discouragement. Keeping the rules, laws, and customs of Christianity doesn’t save us. Jesus Christ will free you to serve him out of love and gratitude. Christ’s love will truly set you free, from merely any external code. We now serve not by obeying a set of rules, but out of love for God. Let the reality of Christ’s power lift you up to real victory over sin. Christ who has conquered sin, promises to fight by our side.

In the same way, count yourselves dead in sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

Romans 6: 11-14

Commentary:

“Count yourselves dead to sin” means that we should regard our old sinful nature as dead and unresponsive to sin. Because of our union and identification with Christ, we are not longer obligated to carry out those old motives, desires, and goals. So let us consider ourselves to be what God has in fact made us. When we were under the law, sin was our master – the law does not justify us or help us overcome sin. We have a new start, and the Holy Spirit will help us become, in our daily experience, what Christ has declared us to be. Without Jesus we would have no choice, we would have to apprentice ourselves to sin. The results would be guilt, suffering, and separation from God. Thanks to Jesus, we can now choose God as our master.

Scripture: Romans 14: 1-4

Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgement on disputable matters. One man’s faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. The man who eats everything must not look down on him who does not, and the man who does not eat everything must not condemn the man who does, for God has accepted him. Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls, and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand. 

Scripture Commentary: it is important to take a self inventory to discover where our faith is weak and where our faith is strong

Who is weak in faith, and who is strong?

We are all weak in some areas and strong in others. Our faith is strong in one area if we can survive contact with sinners without falling into their patterns. It is weak in an area if we must avoid certain activities, people, or places in order to protect our spiritual life.

It is important to take a self inventory in order to find out our strengths and weaknesses. Whenever in doubt, we should ask, “Can I do that without sinning? Can I influence others for good, rather than being influenced by them?”

In areas of strength we should not fear being defiled by the world, instead we should go and serve God. In areas of weakness, we need to be cautious. If we have a strong faith but shelter it, we are not doing Christ’s work in the world. If we have a weak faith but expose it, we are being extremely foolish.

Ask yourself, “Am I so strong, I need only myself, or is Jesus my salvation, my Lord?”

For since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became goals and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

Romans 1: 18-22

Commentary:

Why is God angry at sinful people? They substituted the truth about him with a fantasy of their own imagination. They have stifled the truth God naturally reveals to all people in order to believe anything that supports their own self centered lifestyle.

God cannot tolerate sin because his nature is morally perfect. He cannot ignore or condone such willful rebellion. God wants to remove the sin and restore the sinner to his kingdom. He is able to, as long as the sinner does not stubbornly distort or reject the truth.

The Lord’s anger erupts against those who persist in sinning. Repent. Make sure you are not pursuing a fantasy rather than the true God. Don’t suppress the truth about him merely to protect your own life style.

You are given the choice of either accepting or rejecting God. Don’t be fooled. No excuses will be accepted when God judges your response to him. Begin today to give your devotion and worship to him.

Scripture: Romans 6: 1, 12, 14, 18, 22

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?(1) Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye shall obey it in the lusts thereof.(12)  For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.(14)  Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.(18) But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.(22)

Scripture Commentary: Do not continue in sin;  put your life in the Lord’s hands

Now that our Lord Jesus Christ has removed the shackles of death and sin from you, how does it feel? If you do not know, then you are still living your old sinful life.  Do not continue in sin.

If you think because you were baptized in the name of Jesus Christ that you are one of his, but you still live your old life, you are wrong. The body we inherited from Adam is the rebellious, sin-loving body.  Let that sin-loving body go.

Set yourself free to do God’s work by letting your old sinful nature die once and for all.  Let the Spirit of God grow in you and let the weak flesh melt away.

Through faith in Jesus Christ, you are acquitted. Put your life in His Hands and you will no longer be a slave to sin. If you truly do this you are now resurrected into a new life with Christ and have an unbroken fellowship with God, and freedom from sin’s hold on you.
