You Can Overcome Temptation with God

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10: 12-14

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.  There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.  Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

Scripture Commentary: Paul gives us guidance on how to resist temptation

If we acknowledge our human weakness and let God in our lives to guide us, we will see that the only way is His way.  God can help us through any trial and temptation if we lean on Him.

Today’s pressures make it easy to ignore or forget the lessons of those who have gone before us.  This is why we must study the Bible.  It tells the mistakes and lessons that those who have gone ahead of us have learned.  Through them, we can avoid repeating the same mistakes.

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul gave us strong encouragement about how to resist temptation.  He tells us that by turning to God, we will make it through our trials and temptations.

We must give Jesus Christ our full allegiance.

When God is the guiding force of our principles, then everything we do is glorifying God.  He has saved us, so we now can serve Him.

God is the Foundation

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3: 1, 9, 11, 16

And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.(1)  For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.(9)  For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.(11)  Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?(16)

Scripture Commentary: The Gospel of Christ is the foundation leading to the promise of eternal life

The beginning of our Christian life was infantile. We quarreled like children and acted immature. We are still that immature child. If you have not accepted God fully in your life, to the point that Jesus is your way of living, then you are a child in God’s eye.

Jesus is the foundation. Accept his watering Spirit and you will feel your spirit grow in His love for you. Everything we are and do must fit into the pattern provided by God. The Gospel is the foundation. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the promise of eternal life.

We are not victims of nonbelievers who fear death.  We hold no terrors because Christ has conquered all fears. We must do what God tells us to do in the Bible and through his Holy Spirit each and every day. If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior then you have no fear in your life.

Can Others See the Temple of God in You?

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3: 11, 16-17, 23

For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.  Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.

Scripture Commentary: Can Others See The Temple of God in You?

We are the temple that God made. Our lives are a series of actions we do in the name of God. How do you live your life? Can others see God in you? Or do they see Satan in you?

If we act ungodly we are not building the temple of Jesus Christ for others to see. How can we show the love of God by acting ungodly? We can’t. The Spirit of God is in us if we let it dwell in us. God has given us the choice to follow and live as close to Him as possible. He knows we alone are weak. If we follow Christ we will become strong.

We, as followers of Christ fear nothing, for not even death has a hold on us. Nonbelievers can only fear death. We are God’s children, His temple, and if we are and do His work the day that He calls us to be with him will be the day of eternal glory.

Where is the Wise? Search for Wisdom

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1: 19-20

For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

Scripture Commentary: Knowledge vs. Wisdom

We can spend a lifetime accumulating knowledge attending school, memorizing facts, and learning to apply data to our daily lives.  We can do all of this yet not gain the wisdom that comes from a personal relationship with God.

Our society worships earthly power, influence, and wealth. Jesus came as a humble, poor servant.  He offers his kingdom to those who have faith, entering into a personal relationship with him.  Faith is more important than all of our good deeds and worldly things.

Come to the crucified and risen Christ to receive eternal life and the joy of a personal relationship with our Savior.  Others often refer to people as “foolish” when they simply accept Christ’s offer.  These “foolish” people are actually wisest of all. They alone will live eternally with God.

Skill and knowledge do not get a person into God’s kingdom.  Simple faith does this. No one can boast that their achievements earned them eternal life with Our Lord Jesus Christ. There is nothing we can do to earn our salvation; we need only accept what Jesus has already done for us.

Husband and Wife: Keep God in Your Marriage

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 7: 27

Art thou bound unto a wife? Seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? Seek not a wife.

Scripture Commentary: Men, a wife won’t solve your problems.  Likewise to women, a husband won’t solve yours.

Many people naively think that marriage will solve their problems. Here are some problems marriage won’t solve: loneliness, sexual (and other) temptations, satisfaction of one’s deep emotional needs, and elimination of life’s difficulties.

Marriage alone does not hold two people together.  Commitment does – commitment to Christ and to each other despite conflicts and problems. As wonderful as marriage is, it does not automatically solve everything.

Whether married or single, we must be content with our situation and focus on a relationship with Christ before we can pursue a successful relationship with others.

Paul urges believers not to regard marriage, home, or financial security as the ultimate goals in life. As much as possible, we should live unhindered by the cares of this world, such as burdensome mortgages, budgets, investments, or debts that might keep us from doing God’s work.

A married man or woman must take care of earthly responsibilities, but they should make every effort to keep them modest and manageable. Keep Jesus in your marriage. God bless you both.

Recognize God’s Work in You

By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. For I am the last of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the Church of God.

1 Corinthians 15: 2-9

Commentary:

Churches contain people who do not yet believe. Some are moving in the direction of belief, and others are simply pretending. The Good News about Jesus Christ will save us if we firmly believe it and faithfully follow it. Paul had been an enemy of the Christian Church even to the point of capturing and persecuting believers. Thus he felt unworthy to be called an apostle of Christ. He knew that he had worked hard and accomplished much. But only because God had poured kindness and grace upon him. True humility is not convincing yourself that you are worthless, but recognizing God’s work in you. Because Christ rose from the dead as he promised, we know that what he said is true – he is God. Because he rose, our sins are forgiven, as he forgave Paul’s he will forgive yours. Put yourself in the hands of Christ and trust him.

Do You Believe Christ is Raised From the Dead?

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15: 12-14

But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.  And if Christ is not been raised, our preaching is useless and so if your faith.

Scripture Commentary:

Do you believe that our Lord Jesus Christ was raised from the dead? Do you believe that you, a follower of Jesus Christ, will be raised from the dead?

When we were neither believing nor following Jesus, we were dead in our spiritual body.  Place yourself in his hands; give your lifestyle to him.  Then you will be raised from the dead.

If you truly believe that Jesus Christ won the ultimate victory, that fact alone must affect the way you live right now. We Christians know that our life is beyond the grave and that our life on earth is only a preparation for our life that will never end with Jesus Christ.

We all face limitations here on earth, but with Jesus we have no limitations. Because of Christ’s resurrection, nothing we do in His name is in vain.

Do not hesitate to do good because you don’t see the results right away. God works on His own time, not ours. Do the work for God that He has placed you here to do, and he will take care of the rest.
